ABOUT PROJECT

An interactive digital monograph celebrating historic watchmaking, fusing macro-cinematography with custom liquid shaders to elevate digital storytelling. The Chronos Foundation preserves and documents rare, highly valuable vintage timepieces. They wanted to create a digital archive that felt like a luxury collector's edition coffee table book, allowing audiences to explore the inner mechanics of rare complications. Chronos partnered with Clonex to build a custom, headless web experience. The goal was to translate the slow, tactile elegance of mechanical horology into a premium, interactive digital medium.

THE CHALLENGES

The challenge was capturing the intricate, reflective nature of physical watches and rendering custom image-distortion mechanics without introducing system lag. Luxury products depend entirely on texture, lighting, and pacing. Standard, flat web grids fail to convey the complex depth of polished steel, sapphire glass, and moving internal gears. However, integrating macro-cinematography files with interactive scroll mechanics places an enormous load on the browser's GPU. Without precise thread management, heavy image assets and custom transition shaders quickly conflict, resulting in choppy frame rates that completely destroy the premium luxury experience.

THE APPROACH

We built a headless web archive running custom WebGL fragment shaders, mapping user inputs to fluid visual refractions that mimic sapphire crystal surfaces. Editorial Space Mapping Clonex designed a spacious, layout-driven interface using Next.js. We structured the navigation around wide grid lines and extensive negative space to evoke an high-end editorial aesthetic.

Luxury digital experiences require an uncompromising focus on pacing and visual texture. Clonex created a headless web archive using Next.js, integrating the OGL WebGL library to run high-performance custom fragment shaders. As the user reads through the brand history, the layout seamlessly deconstructs the physical components of historic watch movements on screen. Every scroll event manipulates liquid-distortion shaders on the imagery, mimicking the refraction of light through a sapphire watch crystal.
